About

A partnership of health.

Healthy Hoosiers was created jointly by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Lilly USA, LLC (Lilly). The two Indiana-based companies determined that their efforts could be more impactful if they worked together on a common goal. Lilly and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield then looked to local advocacy groups for support and expertise. Together Anthem, Lilly, the American Diabetes Association, Governor Daniels' INShape Indiana, the Indiana Health Information Exchange, the Indiana State Department of Health, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation founded the Healthy Hoosiers Alliance.

In 2006 diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. In 2007 the prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes in the U.S. was 24 million and it was estimated that over 57 million adult Americans had pre-diabetes.1 Although improving, in 2001, the rate of eye and foot exams, self-monitoring of blood glucose, and vaccinations were below levels recommended by national health objectives.2

In Indiana, it is estimated that in 2006 8.1% of the adult population had been diagnosed with diabetes.3 This is higher than the national average in 2007 of 7.8%.1 In fact, in 2008 Indiana had the 11th highest rate of obesity in the nation, with 63.2% of the people in the state obese or overweight.4 This epidemic continues to grow in Indiana at an alarming rate. Through this alliance, it is our desire to change the trend for Hoosiers with diabetes or at risk for developing diabetes.
